Biohacking Skincare With PRP Vampire Facials

The Vampire Facial: Kim Kardashian made it famous, but most people are focused on the blood, not the benefits. On the latest episode of Biohack-HERS, HigherDOSE Founders, Lauren Berlingeri and Katie Kaps head to Plump, a New York City medical spa that specializes in the latest skin innovations, to experience the vampire facial — aka, the PRP facial.

The PRP facial (which is also sometimes called the vampire or blood facial) is a procedure that — you guessed it — uses blood to regenerate the complexion. Albeit a little gruesome, the facial is considered the Holy Grail of anti-aging skincare treatments, and the celebrity-approved beauty biohack has grown in popularity, thanks to celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Angelina Jolie sacrificing their blood for beauty. For this procedure, blood is drawn from your body and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, aka the liquid gold that boasts all of the growth factors, which can help boost collagen production, elasticity, and trigger skin regeneration.

Once the plasma is separated from the blood, a practitioner applies it to the complexion and penetrates it into the skin using a microneedling device, which features a bunch of tiny needles that create micro-trauma to trigger skin regeneration. When in a controlled setting, creating micro-traumas on the skin can promote an inflammatory response, which is where the skin starts to heal itself. As a result, people experience decreased lines and wrinkles, a boost in collagen production and elasticity, and a youthful glow — all thanks to their own blood supply.

While this procedure is not for the faint of heart — or the squeamish — Berlingeri and Kaps learned that it’s actually not as scary as it looks. It’s also a great anti-aging treatment for anyone looking to replenish their skin without synthetic injectables. After all, the vampire facial is all about helping your own body heal and optimize through the power of its own blood supply.
