Unlocking Ayurveda: Dr. Kumar-Singh’s Guide to Longevity & Balance

Ayurveda, often called the “science of life,” is more than 5,000 years old. But what does it mean for us today — in a world of wearable tech, biohacking, and modern stressors? We sat down with Dr. Kumar-Singh, MD, an integrative physician, podcast host, and author of The Longevity Formula, to talk about bridging East and West, simple daily rituals, and how ancient wisdom meets modern science.

You have such a unique background being raised with Ayurvedic traditions and then trained in Western medicine. Can you share your personal story of what first drew you to Ayurveda and how your career as an ER physician shaped that journey?
I grew up first-generation South Asian in a home where Ayurveda wasn’t a “practice”—it was simply how we lived. I didn’t truly appreciate it until I was in my medical training, when I started having health issues, despite “normal” labs and imaging. That experience sent me looking for answers I couldn’t find in Western medicine and back to what had quietly kept me healthy all along: living in sync with nature’s daily, seasonal, and life-stage rhythms. I ultimately left emergency medicine to integrate both systems.

Many readers may be unfamiliar with Ayurveda. How would you describe it in simple, approachable terms for someone new to the concept?
Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old science, is the art of living in harmony with nature so you can enjoy vibrant health. It teaches that everything, including human beings, is made of the five elements—space, air, fire, water, earth. These combine into three mind-body constitutions, called doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Each of us is born with a genetic blueprint, our dosha. When you drift from your unique balance, your body “taps you on the shoulder” with symptoms. Ayurveda is the daily practice of course-correcting back to balance.

What are some myths or common misconceptions people have about Ayurveda?
That Ayurveda is anti-Western medicine — not true. Ayurveda is integrative and embraces medications, procedures, and surgery when appropriate. (2) That it’s vague or unscientific — modern data on circadian biology, the gut-brain axis, and autophagy validate its core principles.

You’ve lived at the intersection of both Ayurveda and Western medicine. How do you see these two systems complementing each other rather than competing?
They’re deeply complementary. Ayurveda identified digestion as the foundation of health and emphasized circadian living over 5,000 years ago; Western science has validated both, linking gut health to virtually every system and showing how light-driven hormone cycles regulate physiology. In my own breast-cancer journey, I used evidence-based medical care alongside Ayurvedic tools for stress regulation, sleep, nutrition, and recovery. Western medicine is stronger with Ayurveda and Ayurveda is stronger with Western medicine.

From your perspective, where does Ayurveda belong in today’s modern wellness landscape?
Ayurveda is the original personalized, data-driven medicine. In a world of wearable tech, AI, and biomarkers, Ayurveda offers a 5,000-year-old operating system that individualizes care based on your patterns, environment, and season of life. It has a central role to play, clinically, preventively, and for longevity.

PEMF Tech HigherDOSE

Where do you feel technologies, like infrared, PEMF, and red light therapy, can supplement Ayurvedic practices?
Think of tech as “amplifiers,” not replacements. Start with the Ayurvedic foundations—light exposure timed to the day, breathwork, nourishing routines, and food timing. Then layer tools selectively: red light to support circadian cues in darker months; PEMF for recovery and stress modulation; infrared heat for circulation and relaxation. The Ayurvedic lens—Who are you? What’s your goal? What season are you in?—determines if/when these adjuncts fit.

What are a few simple Ayurvedic principles or practices that anyone, even a beginner, could start incorporating today to feel a real shift in their wellbeing?
   I teach a “12-12-12” framework:

  1. 12-hour overnight fast (7 p.m.–7 a.m.) to support autophagy and cellular repair.

  2. At least 12 minutes of morning sunlight to reset circadian rhythm.

  3. 12 minutes of meditation and breathwork daily

Do you have a favorite daily ritual or routine from Ayurveda that you personally rely on?
A simple morning trifecta: sip warm water to “wake” digestion and scrape the tongue, followed by 10–15 minutes of breath-led meditation, then step outside for natural light.

Your new book, The Longevity Formula, explores how Ayurveda can support cellular repair and long-term vitality. Can you give us a glimpse into that philosophy?
It’s about increasing cellular repair and decreasing inflammation so tissues stay resilient as we age. Practically, that means aligning routines with circadian biology, smart fasting to stimulate cellular clean-up, and daily breath/movement to regulate the nervous and immune systems.

You also host The Healing Catalyst podcast. What conversations or themes are you most passionate about sharing with listeners right now?
Bridging science and tradition for real-life change. Topics include time-restricted eating, sleep, menopause, metabolism, sexual wellness, and even the role of AI in health.

For someone just beginning their wellness journey, what’s one small step you would recommend to start living in greater balance?
Go outside in the morning and let natural light hit your eyes (no sunglasses for those first minutes). It’s the simplest lever for sleep, mood, metabolism, and hormone balance.

Finally, where can readers go to learn more from you and stay connected with your work?
